From April 1942 to August 1945, with only 5,000 sets in households nationwide, production of new TVs, radios, and other broadcasting equipment for civilian purposes was stopped to focus on the war effort

By 1947 there were approximately 44,000 television sets in North America, with 30,000 of those estimated to be in the New York area where most broadcasts were centered
